Mill Street Grill celebrates fifth year

STAUNTON - Mill Street Grill is celebrating its fifth anniversary this month, owner Terry Holmes said last week.

As part of the anniversary celebration, Holmes said the downtown restaurant is holding a drawing for accommodations on a trip to any place in U.S. and five $50 gift certificates to the restaurant.

Mill Street Grill is also offering several buy one/get one free deals and new daily specials as part of the anniversary promotion, Holmes said.

The reason the restaurant has reached what Holmes said is "a milestone" for a restaurant is that it offers good food at a good price in a nice atmosphere, he said.

"People like us, I think, because we make almost everything here from scratch," Holmes said. "You might not find that in some of the chain restaurants, but you do here.

"Another reason people like us is because they can come in here and make an evening of it," Holmes said. "If you want it, the table is yours for the night. We don't try to push people out of here. Most of the time, people want to have dinner, and we let them."

Holmes said Mill Street Grill's menu is also an attraction.

"You have a wide range of foods to choose from here," Holmes said. "You can come in and have an entrée or if you're not all that hungry, you can go with an appetizer, soup, a salad or a sandwich."

Mill Street Grill features unique appetizers like oysters Rockefeller, spinach cheese dip, chicken chili, Holmes said.

There are six sandwiches on the Mill Street Grill menu now, Holmes said. While the crabcake sandwich is probably most distinctive sandwich, the old fashioned hamburger is still the best seller, he said.

The salads are made fresh, Holmes said, using only the best Romaine and leaf lettuce.

"We also use cucumbers, squash, cherry tomatoes, radish, onions and toasted almonds in our salads," Holmes said. "Having one of our salads is kind of like going to the salad bar without having to get out of your seat."

Mill Street Grill's barbecue ribs are maybe the most distinctive entrée in the restaurant, Holmes said. Patrons have a choice between baby back pork ribs, St. Louis pork ribs and beef ribs, he said.

What makes the ribs for Mill Street Grill customers, Holmes said, is the house barbecue sauce.

"The barbecue sauce is tangy and spicy because it is made in a tomato-based sauce," Holmes said. "It's popular with our regular customers. We have people come in all the time asking us for bottles of it so they can use it for their backyard barbecues."

The restaurant also offers up New York strip steaks, filets and delmonico steaks that can be grilled three or four different ways, Holmes said.

Mill Street Grill has a fresh selection of seafood that comes in daily, Holmes said, including grilled salmon, tuna, soft shelled crabs and crabcake.

Other entrees on the Mill Street Grill menu include chicken fettuccine, provolone, proscuitto stuffed chicken and roasted rack of lamb, Holmes said.

All entrees come with a fresh rack of bread with flavored butters, plus roasted garlic mashed potatoes, baked potato, rice or French fries, and a vegetable of the day, he said.

Mill Street Grill also has a vegetarian menu, a light side menu and a child's menu. The vegetarian menu features a bean burger made of black beans and an assortment of herbs and spices, which is "probably our second-biggest selling sandwich after hamburgers," Holmes said.

The light side menu features smoked chicken pasta made with defatted chicken stock and no-fat parmesan cheese and chicken and shrimp brasica served with spinach and rice. Both items have less than 6 grams of fat per serving, Holmes said.

Mill Street Grill is open for dinner from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. The restaurant is also open for brunch on Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m, and open for dinner on Sundays until 10 p.m.
